How Do Quartz Watches Work?

A quartz watch is usually made up of three separate component pieces which consist of the following:-

A) A power supply, either a battery or solar energy panels.

B) A display to tell the time, this can either be a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Light Emitting Diode (LED) or an analogue display using the normal hour, minute and second hands, this will contain gears and wheels and a balance mechanism.

When an electronic charge is sent through the quartz crystal it vibrates and it's these vibrations that are used to tell the time. Quartz vibrates at a constant low frequency of 32 kilohertz and these vibrations can be converted into tiny electronic signals which can then be electronically converted into the required frequency, such as seconds and therefore create a precise time and as quartz in unaffected by changes in temperature and mens watches under 200pressure then this makes quartz the ideal material to use as a resonator.

Simply put, electricity from a battery or from solar panels is sent through the quartz crystal which produces regular oscillations, the oscillations are converted by an integrated circuit so they vibrate at the rate of exactly one second, these signals are then converted into either a digital display or a movement equivalent to one second, either on the display on a digital quartz watch or as a mechanical tick of a second finger on an analogue quartz watch.

Once the time period of one second has been set then the rest of the mechanical device or digital display can be easily set up. So just by knowing the length of one second, quartz watches can then convert this into minutes, hours, days, months and years and then provide the precise time and date.

Because the frequency of quartz is constant and precise then it makes quartz watches extremely reliable and in tests even the lowest grade mass produced quartz watches were precise to about less then half a second each day and more precise manufactured high end quartz watches have been measured to be precise at up to less than 1 second per year.
